MANILA - Units of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 are banned in all aircraft, cargo flights, and airport premises due to safety issues, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced Tuesday.

Note 7 units were recalled and replaced by Samsung due to overheating and exploding batteries, but CAAP said "similar incidents of exploding and catching fire had also been reported on these replacement devices."

"In this regard, pursuant to the powers vested on the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) under Republic Act 9497 otherwise known as the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Act of 2008 and in the interest of aviation safety, all carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices are forbidden in airport premises, on-board the aircraft and cargo flights," CAAP said in a memorandum circular dated October 13.

“All operators are hereby advised to strictly implement this memorandum circular,” it added.

An earlier advisory only advised passengers to turn off and not charge Samsung Galaxy Note 7 units inside the airport and during flights.

Meanwhile, flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) said it is enforcing a total ban on the carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices in airport premises, onboard the aircraft and as cargo shipment.

Passengers found in possession of a Samsung Note 7 prior to boarding an aircraft would be denied boarding until the device is removed from possession, PAL said.

"The Samsung Galaxy Note 7, classified as forbidden hazardous material, poses a risk when transported by air. These may ignite and become a fuel source for fire even when powered off," the airline said in a statement.

Cebu Pacific also earlier banned the use of the device in all its flights. [Cebu Pacific: http://news.abs-cbn.com/business/09/12/16/pal-cebu-pacific-ban-use-of-samsung-note-7-on-flights]

In October 11, Samsung Electronics called a worldwide halt to the sale and exchange of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, citing continued safety concerns, and advised all customers to stop using the device immediately.
