MANILA, Philippines - Unimart supermarket will soon open a branch in Pasig City. This is only its second branch, more than 40 years after Unimart first opened in Greenhills Shopping Center in 1970.
Ortigas & Company tapped Unimart as the anchor tenant at Capitol Commons, its new mixed-use development in Pasig City.

"We are happy that our partnership with Unimart has grown stronger through time. The brands Unimart and Greenhills Shopping Center have grown hand-in-hand for more than 4 decades now and we are more than pleased that it will also be the same for our new development, Capitol Commons. We at Ortigas & Company greatly value our partnership with Unimart, Rowell L. Recinto, President and CEO of Ortigas & Company, said.
Capitol Commons is a 10-hectare master planned mixed-use development located at the former Rizal Provincial Capitol in Pasig.
Aside from Unimart, Capitol Commons will have a retail component called Estancia. Also coming up is The Royalton, which will be the first residential tower.
Recinto, representing Ortigas, and Peter Ng, representing Unimart Inc., signed the deal last September 26.
The partnership between Ortigas and Unimart began in 1967, when Atty. Rafael Ortigas, Jr. invited Henry Ng to open a grocery store at the Greenhills Shopping Center, which was yet to be developed at that time. They visited and studied supermarkets in the US to find out how they can re-create a modern American grocery in the Philippines.
In 1970, Unimart opened its doors and was the biggest and most modern supermarket at that time. Unimart was the first building to be built at the Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan.
