MANILA -- Jollibee said Friday it would build a "significant business" in the US Mexican food category, expanding its North American presence.

The Philippines' largest fastfood chain said it partnered with popular chef and TV host Rick Bayless and Tortas Frontera to tap into a segment with sales of up to $45 billion in 2017.

"This venture is very much in line with JFC’s mission: to serve great tasting food and spread the joy of eating to everyone," Jollibee told the stock exchange.

The Philippines' largest fast food operator has over 2 dozen stores in the US and recently raised its stake in Smashburger to 85 percent for $100 million.

The company in March opened a Jollibee branch in Milan, its first in Europe. In May, it announced plans to acquire the master franchise of Tim Ho Wan in the Asia Pacific.
