Third telco search must be based on committed service: official

MANILA -- The challenger to PLDT Inc and Globe Telecom should be chosen based on their highest committed level of service, the Cabinet official overseeing the search said Tuesday.

An oversight committee will meet on Friday to determine how the third telecommunications company is selected. Another option is to award the rights to the highest bidder.

Department of Information and Communications Technology officer-in-charge Eliseo Rio said he did not expect his remarks over a possible resignation to be publicized.

A newspaper report quoted Rio as saying that he would resign if the third telco is not chosen based on highest committed service.

"I will be useless If I implement something that I know will fail. If my heart is not on it, what is my use? If I cannot do my job, then might as well resign and then somebody can do it better than me," he told DZMM.
