MANILA – Only those drivers who cancel trips frequently will be affected by a new feature of the Grab app that masks the exact destination of passengers, the head of the ride-sharing service in the Philippines said Thursday.

The destination-masking feature will affect the "bottom 25 percent of drivers who are the most choosy," said Grab Philippines country manager Brian Cu.

Grab has come under fire from irate commuters who complain of high rates and frequent cancellations since the company took over the Southeast Asia operations of erstwhile rival Uber this month.

Cu said Grab's driver fleet was expected to reach 46,000 after the Uber merger, but only 8,000 to 12,000 are on the road on an hourly basis.
