An economist from Nomura Securities believes the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) cannot delay hiking rates further.

Euben Paracuelles, senior economist for Southeast Asia of Nomura Securities, said he was expecting BSP to increase borrowing rates.

"I'm a little disappointed, I thought they were going to be hiking today, I thought it was going to be a good day for them to re-assert their inflation fighting credentials, given that, it's pretty clear, that in the last few months inflation has been going up," he told ANC.

"In the case of BSP, they might be a little comfortable in their own forecast, especially going to next year, but I think they cannot probably wait much longer in terms of hiking rates," he added.

BSP on Thursday maintained the overnight borrowing rate at 3 percent, unchanged since September 2014.
