The rise of craft beers and specialty pubs shows that one doesn’t just guzzle down beer without regard for its taste.

So to celebrate the beverage’s new gourmet status, 40 connoisseurs from around the world gathered in Belgium for the first Brussels Beer Challenge, an international three-day beer-tasting contest.

Tasting the beers is akin to tasting wine as judges look at color, aroma and, after a little swirl of the glass, taste.

Belgium, represented by 60 breweries, and the United States with 50 breweries are favorites to win the challenge.

Some other countries in the contest are Germany, Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom.
