The "anti-corruption crackdown" of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is meant to send a message that he will brook no dissent on his drive to reform the ultraconservative kingdom, an analyst said Monday.

James Dorsey, senior fellow at Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, said Saudi royals, ministers and businessmen were being purged to eliminate other centers of power in the kingdom, and not just because they may oppose Prince Mohammed's reform drive.

Dorsey however said that while Prince Mohammed remains hugely popular in the kingdom, he will need to manage the expectations on his move to introduce changes in the Saudi society.

"Salman until now has had big pronouncements, expressions of his vision, but no delivery," Dorsey told ANC's Market Edge.
