Filipinos will likely welcome the New Year next week with fair weather, state weather bureau PAGASA said Friday, in the wake of a Christmas Day typhoon that left at least 28 dead and sent tens of thousands into evacuation centers on Christmas Day.

Typhoon Ursula was 335 kilometers west of Zambales at 4 a.m. and no longer had any direct effect on the country. It is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Saturday, said PAGASA weather forecaster Ezra Bulquerin.

On New Year's Eve, Tuesday, the country can expect fair weather with spots of light rain in the afternoon or evening, he told radio DZMM.

The Ilocos, Cordillera, and Cagayan Valley regions and Aurora province on Friday will experience cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms, he said.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country meanwhile can expect fair weather with isolated rains in the afternoon or evening, he added.
