The Philippine military is accusing New People's Army rebels of violating their ceasefire agreement following reported attacks on government targets earlier this week.

Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay, Philippine Army chief, called the attacks senseless and decried the timing just days before Christmas.

"We just hope that the CPP-NPA will not miss this opportunity by staging these senseless attacks, especially during a time when the nation celebrates the season of love, peace and unity," he said in a statement.

Separate attacks in Camarines Sur and in Iloilo on Monday left one soldier dead and 8 other security forces wounded.

Communist leader Jose Maria Sison has downplayed the attacks as isolated cases. He said the incidents were not meant to violate the truce with the government.
