MANILA - Senator Loren Legarda on Monday hinted at staying in her post as a lawmaker despite talks she may be named new Social Welfare secretary.

"I hope to continue and finish the 2019 budget, which is a year from now. We’ll take it from there," Legarda, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, told ANC's Headstart.

Asked in the interview if she would take the post vacated by former Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, Legarda said: "Can I say that I’m thinking about it?"

Pressed if she was offered the portfolio, Legarda said she was not certain whether she is allowed to comment, "but my being mum about it will probably spill the beans."

"Let me just say that I would want to exercise very strong oversight functions over a department that is very important, that takes care of the needs of our people," she said.

Legarda said she may currently be doing oversight functions over other government agencies, but the DSWD is a "very important department that should take care of the poorest and most vulnerable populations."

The DSWD is currently headed by Undersecretary Emmanuel Leyco as officer-in-charge.
