The Metro Manila wage board has approved raising the minimum monthly salary of house helpers in the region to P5,000 from P3,500, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said Friday.

The pay hike will take effect 15 days after it is published on a major newspaper on Monday, Bello told radio DZMM.

The Cabinet official, however, admitted that the labor department lacked authority to penalize employers who would violate the minimum wage. A law is needed to give the agency this power, he said.
