The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Wednesday urged motorists to avoid EDSA on the afternoon of Nov. 30 to give way to the vehicle convoys of athletes and spectators in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

The nearly 3-week regional event will start with a ceremony at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, north of the capital, on Saturday.

Success in ferrying the athletes to and from hotels and competition venues will "bring pride" to the country after its hosting of the SEA Games was criticized for lodging troubles, inadequate meals and unfinished venues, said MMDA's head for EDSA traffic Bong Nebrija.

"Kung magsa-shopping po kayo, paki iwasan naman po sana iyong EDSA, especially iyong northbound, from lunch time up to 5 in the afternoon... para hindi na po tayo makadagdag sa volume," he addressed the public in a radio DZMM interview.

(If you will shop, please avoid EDSA, especially the northbound lanes from lunch time up to 5 p.m. so we won't increase traffic volume.)

Before the shopping rush for Christmas, an end-to-end drive through EDSA took about an hour and 10 minutes for private motorists and almost 2 hours for buses, said Nebrija.

Thailand's football team reportedly canceled its first day of training after its arrival was delayed by traffic in Manila.
