The head of the Armed Forces of the Philippines on Monday said he wants to be a peace consultant after he retires next month.

AFP Chief of Staff General Carlito Galvez Jr. told reporters that he conveyed this to Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza and that he "accepted my request."

Galvez was chairman of the government's Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities before taking over the military's helm.

He served for 12 years in Mindanao, during which he said he visited rebel lairs where soldiers were often killed, earning these areas the tag "point of no return."

Galvez said he "saw the misery" in large parts of the south, which lacked access to education and basic services.

The AFP chief said he will urge the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters to join the January plebiscite for the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which grants wider self-rule to Muslim in the south.
