The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Thursday urged the public to participate in a nationwide drill that would test earthquake emergency plans in houses, schools and offices, following 3 powerful tremors that devastated Mindanao.

Drill participants should "duck, cover and hold" when an alarm rings at 9 a.m. and proceed after to evacuation areas, said NDRRMC Spokesperson Mark Timbal.

"Gamitin po nating motibasyon iyong nangyari mga lindol nitong nakaraan at ito ang magiging susi para maging ligtas po tayo... iyong paghahanda," he told radio DZMM.

(Let us use as motivation the recent earthquakes. Preparedness will be the key to our safety.)

Last October, 3 strong quakes destroyed thousands of structures in Mindanao and left a combined death toll of at least 28.

The NDRRMC is studying a proposal to make its quarterly quake drill mandatory for all organizations, Timbal said.
