An agriculture group questioned Tuesday a slight increase in the prices of eggs despite ample supply in Metro Manila.

The farm price of eggs is at P5.12 to P5.97, depending on size and source, and its retail price should only be higher by 50 centavos per piece, said Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag) chairman Rosendo So.

This means that a tray of 30 eggs should only retail for a maximum of P195.

But in Quezon City's Commonwealth Market, the price per tray increased to P205 from P190 for medium-sized eggs, and P238 from P210 for "jumbo" eggs.

"Continuous ang production. Walang dahilan na tumaas sobra-sobra," So told radio DZMM.

"Dapat ma-check natin ang mga nagde-deliver bakit ang taas," he said.

(The production is continuous. There is no reason for a high increase. We should check this with those who deliver.)

Meanwhile, demand for pork is gradually returning after an outbreak of African swine fever, said So. Pork prices may stabilize in December, he said.

Pork at Commonwealth Market fetched P170 to P180 per kilo, while the price of chicken jumped to P170 from P150 per kilo.
