MANILA - The national ID system, which will begin its trial run next month, will help the government in its aim of financial inclusion and ease of doing business, an official of the Philippine Statistics Authority said Tuesday.

Speaking at ANC's Headstart, National Statistician Lisa Bersales said the number one reason for the national ID system is for Filipinos to "transact business much easier with government" as they would no longer be required to show 2 identification cards to prove their identity.

While a single national ID system for citizens and resident aliens would be established through this process, Bersales clarified that Filipinos would still need to apply for license cards (driver's license, professional license) and passports.

The government hopes to distribute the ID cards to those born prior to the enactment of the law over the next 4 to 5 years, said Bersales.
