MANILA - The visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping is a "milestone" for the Philippines, but it is not a rare event and it signals the continuation of the "great" friendship between the countries, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin said Monday.

Xi is scheduled to visit the country next month after the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting in Papua New Guinea.

"The visit of President Xi Jinping is the visit of one of China’s greatest architects in her development and progress. This is of course a milestone for us, but at the same time, it is not a rare event," Locsin told reporters in Davao City in a press conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

"We have had 8 visits from top-ranking Chinese leaders which only shows this is not new. This is a continuation of a long and great friendship between our 2 nations," he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte first invited Xi to visit the Philippines during his state visit to China in October 2016, which the Chinese leader “accepted with pleasure.”

The chief executive renewed his invitation to Xi on the sidelines of the APEC leaders’ meeting in Lima, Peru last November 2016. His visit was announced while Duterte was in China's southern Hainan province for the Boao Forum for Asia last April.
