MANILA- "I served my country well."

This was the message of Police General Oscar Albayalde hours after he stepped down as chief of the Philippine National Police Monday.

Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Albayalde said he gave his all as a police officer even before he was appointed as the country's top cop.

"Sa akin, I served my country well, from the start na I was the regional director of the NCRPO (National Capital Region Police Office), alam naman ng mga classmates ko 'yan..." he said.

"Binigay ko, binuhos ko talaga ang sarili ko dito sa kampanya laban sa iligal na droga," he added.

Albayalde, who is set to retire on Nov. 8 said he was going on non-duty status starting Monday. He said last week that he was leaving the PNP top post on Oct. 29.

For the past weeks, the former top cop has been grappling with accusations that he protected his men accused of selling seized narcotics.

During the Senate hearing on the so-called "ninja cops" issue, retired Police Regional Office 3 regional director PCSupt. Rudy Lacadin said Albayalde called him up during the investigation and admitted: "Actually Sir kaunti lang naman ang napunta sa akin diyan."

Albayalde has denied the allegations, saying: "it seems that everybody is ganging up on me."
