The Department of Agriculture on Tuesday said it will help farmers in Kalayaan, Laguna plant other crops after tons of their tomato harvest were rejected by traders due to oversupply.

The farmers have lost some P4 million in revenue because traders in Manila and Quezon City returned their small-sized tomatoes amid an oversupply from other towns, the Laguna Provincial Agriculture Office earlier said.

Sitaw, kalabasa and ampalaya seeds will be given to farmers so they can replace their crops, said DA-Calarbarzon director Arnel De Mesa.

He also denied that the farmers suffered heavy losses due to the tomato surplus.

"Actually, pangatlong buwan na po na maganda ang harvest nila. Malaki na po ang kinita nila noong mga unang 2 buwan," he told radio DZMM.

(This is the third month that their harvest has been good. They've already profited from the first 2 months.)
