MANILA -- Policemen must follow the chain of command headed by General Oscar Albayalde, who is fighting allegations that he is protecting troops who resell illegal drugs, a senior official said Monday.

The seriousness of the allegations against Albayalde has yet to be proven, Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., head of the Manila Police District, told ANC's Early Edition.

"Yes. Kahit anong gawin natin (Whatever we do) he’s still the chief PNP, and as a good soldier we should follow the chain of command," Danao said, when asked if Albayalde had full control over the PNP.

"Medyo mabigat yung allegation pero sabi ko nga, regarding the seriousness kung na-prove ba yan o hindi is still to be seen."

(The allegation weighs heavily but as I said, it remains to be seen if it's been proved or not.)

The PNP Chief has been accused of protecting "ninja cops" or policemen who resell seized illegal drugs.

Albayalde was chief of the Pampanga regional police in 2013 when several of its members were accused of recycling drugs by Benjamin Magalong, then head of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. The charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier ordered the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to investigate Albayalde and other policemen linked to the recycling of illegal drugs. The PNP is under the supervision of the DILG.

Duterte on Sunday defended Albayalde and said he was presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
