Macalintal banks on support from former, present clients for Senate bid
MANILA - Veteran election lawyer Romulo Macalintal on Friday said he would tap some of his former and current clients for support as he runs for senator in next year's polls.
Macalintal, lawyer of Vice President Leni Robredo in her poll protest, said he decided to seek public office after talking to the leader weeks ago.
He said it might be in his advantage that he is "closely connected with so many political leaders," including most of the governors in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
"When I decided to run, marami na akong tinawagang mga kaibigan sa ARMM areas na kung maaari sana, tulungan ninyo ako para sana hindi masyadong magastos. Pwede namang exchange deal—perhaps we can handle their legal problems, but you handle my political problems in your areas para hindi na ako masyadong magastusan," he told ANC's Early Edition.
Macalintal said he has been proposing measures for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, but these were only referred to committees. He was later urged to be the one to support these bills on the Senate floor, he said.
Liberal Party President Senator Francis Pangilinan also confirmed Thursday that Macalintal is included in their Senate lineup, joining reelectionist Senator Bam Aquino, human rights lawyer Jose Manuel "Chel" Diokno, and former Deputy House Speaker Lorenzo "Erin" Tañada II.
"I’ve been the lawyer of the President, the Vice President, governors, senators, congressmen, mayors; pero I was never involved in any transaction, I never asked for any project. I can just bank on my honesty, my credibility and integrity as an election lawyer," said Macalintal.
