MANILA - Senator Antonio Trillanes' amnesty nullification was a "wrong move" politically and has been a distraction for the Upper Chamber, Senator JV Ejercito said Thursday.

"It's affecting our work now, because it's a distraction. Especially now we're unwinding the 17th congress, a lot of landmark legislations are already in advanced stage," Ejercito told ANC.

"I would think it was a wrong move. They should have just let it pass, because if you look at it, his term will end already by next year. By January, it's already political season, nobody would listen to outgoing senators," he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte's proclamation voided the former mutineer's amnesty for supposed failure to comply with its basic requirements such as a formal application and admission of guilt.

Trillanes was arrested on Senate grounds on Tuesday over the rebellion charge against him when he and several other soldiers took over Manila Peninsula hotel in 2007 to demand then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's resignation.
