Former Pangasinan governor and representative Amado Espino Jr. was "in stable condition" early Thursday, following an ambush that killed his police escort and wounded 4 other companions, police said.

Unidentified gunmen attacked the 2 vehicles carrying the former official and his companions in San Carlos City, Pangasinan Wednesday afternoon.

"Siya (Espino) po ay nasa stable condition na po. Siya po ay nagpapagaling na po," said Ilocos region police spokesperson Lt. Col. Mary Crystal Peralta.

Police identified 2 getaway vehicles used by the gunmen, recovered high-powered firearms at the crime scene and were following several leads, Peralta said, declining to give additional details.

A special investigation task group, she said, had been formed to look into the fatal ambush.

Espino was on President Rodrigo Duterte's list of politicians allegedly involved in the drug trade. Duterte later acknowledged there was a mistake and apologized.
