MANILA - Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial and agency officials on Friday ate boiled eggs and fried chicken after it was confirmed that the avian influenza strain that affected a Pampanga town could be transmitted to humans.

Both the Department of Health and Department of Agriculture assured that poultry products are safe for human consumption despite the bird flu outbreak in San Luis, Pampanga.

The H5N6 strain found in the fowls in the said town "could be transmitted to humans, but the rate of mortality and transmission is very, very low," according to Dr. Arlene Vytiaco, Bureau of Animal Industry head for Animal Disease Control Section.
