MANILA - A Commission on Elections official urged lawmakers on Tuesday to require sign language in TV electoral advertisements for Filipinos who have hearing impairments.

Comelec Executive Director Jose Tolentino made the recommendation during a hearing of the Senate committee on electoral reform and people's participation.

Data from the Department of Health's National Registry in 1997 showed 17 percent of the country's population suffers from a hearing impairment.

"Kung pwede isama sa Technical Working Group 'yung sign language, para maging inclusive yung ads natin sa TV," Tolentino said before the hearing was adjourned.

Senate President Koko Pimentel, the committee's chairman, commended the Comelec official's suggestion, adding that closed captioning should also be considered.--report from Anna Cerezo for ABS-CBN News
