MANILA - Former president Benigno Aquino III on Saturday assailed that pronouncement of his successor, President Rodrigo Duterte, that the latter is more interested in saving human lives than championing rights.

Duterte last week dismissed the criticism of rights activists against his war on drugs, saying: "Your concern is human rights, mine is human lives."

"Puwede bang paghiwalayin iyun? Puwede bang wala kang karapatan na universal nga maski saang parte ng mundo, pare-pareho iyung basic rights," he told reporters.

(Can you separate them? Is it possible not to have basic rights that are universal and the same in whatever part of the world?)

"Naalala ko iyung sinabi ng tatay ko noong araw, 'pag pinayagan mong yurakan ang karapatan ng isa, hinahanda mo iyung pagkakataon na iyung karapatan mo rin ang mayurakan," he added.(I remember what my father once said, if you allow the rights of another person to be violated, you are paving the way for your own rights to be trampled upon.)
