MANILA - The Philippine National Police is planning to implement an amnesty to account for about a million loose firearms by next month, its chief said Tuesday.

This would also enable owners to register firearms with the police and discourage the use of unregistered guns, said PNP Chief, Dir. Gen. Oscar Albayalde.

There are about 1.04 million loose firearms, Albayalde told DZMM radio.

Once in police custody, the weapons would be submitted for ballistics exam to determine if it matches with any recorded crime, he said. Otherwise, it would be turned over to the firearms and explosives unit.
