New deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic are "slowly going down", the health department said Tuesday, as cases of the disease continued to spike following relaxed lockdown measures.

The health department as of Tuesday confirmed 46,333 cases of COVID-19, with 1,303 deaths

This is equal to a fatality rate of about 2.9 percent, down from about 10 percent when the pandemic started, said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

"We can see that the deaths here in the country are slowly going down, it’s really decreasing," she told ANC.

"Clinicians now already have much evidence and different information for them to be able to manage and support patients who are severe and critical," she added.

About 96 percent of coronavirus patients have mild symptoms, Vergeire said.
