Cayetano says rift with Sara Duterte 'sorted out'
Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday said he has sorted out a misunderstanding with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who supports his rival for Speaker, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.
President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter in May claimed that Cayetano made a “veiled threat” that the administration coalition might “break up” and affect the 2022 presidential election, if she backed Velasco for speaker.
"Na-sort out na namin ni Mayor iyan," Cayetano told ANC.
(The mayor and I have sorted that.)
"Noong nagkita kami, kinlarify ni Mayor Sara na hindi ako galit, pero kung iyun ang feeling mo — I was trying to explain to her, ma'am hindi iyun ang feeling ko. Siguro the way I talked is different lang sa pagkaintindi mo. Basically ang tema ng pag-uusap namin, 'Ma'am, don't worry. Whatever happens, hindi ako hihiwalay,'" he added.
(When we met, Mayor Sara clarified that I'm not mad but if that's how you feel — I was trying to explain to her, ma'am, that's not how I feel. Perhaps the way I talked is different from your understanding. Basically, the theme of our conversation was, 'Ma'am, don't worry whatever happens, I will not break away.)
In July last year, Duterte-Carpio worked behind the scenes with congressmen to oust then Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez in a dramatic twist to her father’s scheduled State of the Nation Address.
In the run-up to last May's midterm elections, the mayor called Velasco the "next speaker" in campaign hustings for her Hugpong ng Pagbabago party, which swept the May 13 senatorial elections.
Cayetano said he respects the support of the President's children for Velasco.
"Of course, I'd prefer that they like me to be their Speaker, iyung pamilya ni Presidente. It's good for children to be involved and to help influence because mahal nila tatay nila e, mahal nila iyung bansa," said Cayetano.
(Of course, I'd prefer that they like me to be their Speaker, the family of the President. It's good for children to be involved and to help influence because they love their father, they love the country.)
"It's not a matter of they just like Lord better. They probably in their mind think he can help their father better. I respect that. Mas concerned ako sa impluwensya ng unelected businessman like Ramon Ang," added.
(I am more concerned with the influence of an unelected businessman like Ramon Ang.)
Cayetano said Velasco's wife Wen is a lobbyist of Ang, president of San Miguel Corp.
