Ousted chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Thursday said she practiced judicial independence during her stay in office, pointing out that she opposed some policies pushed by former President Benigno Aquino III who appointed her to the top judicial post.

Speaking to ANC, Sereno said that among the Aquino-backed measures that did not get her vote were the implementation of the Priority Development Assistance Fund and Disbursement Acceleration Program, as well as the rescheduling of elections in ARMM.

Aquino, she said, had asked her to remain independent when he interviewed her over the phone for the post of chief justice.

"The only thing he asked me is to do the right thing. He has never called me for any favors or anything of that kind except for one time when I thought that he really did not listen to some objections that I was already registering about a nominee who turned out to be appointed eventually," she said.
