MANILA - The Philippine Mental Health Act would not only focus on treating those diagnosed with mental health issues but also work on educating the public, its author said Monday.

The law, signed only last week, would also call on insurance companies, including state-run PhilHealth, to cover expenses related to mental health issues, said Sen. Risa Hontiveros.

It mandates the Department of Health and the Department of Education to extend the "full range of psychiatric, neurologic, and psychosocial services" at the tertiary level, regional, and provincial hospitals, she told ANC's Headstart.

The law also has provisions for the anti-stigma and anti-discrimination programs in schools and workplaces, she said.

The DOH is currently drafting the law's implementing rules and regulations and its budget is being deliberated by lawmakers, said Hontiveros.
