The Philippine government is arranging a flight to bring home the remains of 282 Filipinos in Saudi Arabia, nearly a fifth of whom died due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Sunday that Saudi King Salman gave the Philippines 72 hours to repatriate the bodies. Manila would opt to bury the 50 COVID-19 fatalities there, he said.

DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr said a Saudi ambassador told him the bodies were "intact" and that the oil-rich nation was "ready to help you bring them home."

"We're getting a cargo flight, even as we speak," he told ANC.

Asked if the Philippines could bring home its late migrant workers home this week, Locsin said, "I hope so."
