'Self-inflicted, congestion, mauled': No changing of tune on Tisoy's death - QCPD chief
MANILA - Police on Friday denied changing its tune on the cause of death of Genesis "Tisoy" Argoncillo who died while in detention earlier this week.
Supt. Carlito Grijaldo, commander of Quezon City Police Station 4, earlier said Argoncillo's death was self-inflicted, claiming the detainee was "mentally disturbed" and was uncontrollable, making a scene inside the cell.
The Quezon City Police District later said Argoncillo complained of shortness of breath and was rushed to a hospital Tuesday, where he was declared dead on arrival.
It was only Thursday that QCPD director Chief Supt. Joselito Esquivel said Argoncillo was mauled by fellow inmates.
In an ANC Headstart interview, Esquivel denied changing their story on Argoncillo's death.
"There was no changing of the tune...I said I took the report from my station commander and the report of my station commander that he was arrested for alarm and scandal," he said.
"On the record that was reported to me, he was arrested for alarm and scandal because some constituents called that he was creating trouble thereat. He was not part of what you call 'Operation Tambay,'" he said.
Esquivel said the attending doctor, who declared Argoncillo dead, attested that "upon cursory examination, there was no external injury."
Argoncillo's death certificate, however, indicated that he died due to multiple blunt force trauma to his neck, head, chest and upper extremities.
Esquivel later said investigators obtained statements from 3 inmates at the Novaliches police station that Argoncillo died after he was mauled by fellow inmates.
At least 5 police officers have been relieved of their posts pending investigation on Argoncillo's death.
