MANILA - Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Martires on Wednesday faced the Judicial and Bar Council, which will decide on who will be the next Ombudsman.

Martires, President Rodrigo Duterte's first appointee to the high court, told the panel that he had been eyeing the Ombudsman post even as he interviewed to be an associate justice, and with Morales stepping down next month, he has "to be man enough to be true to what I said that I'm interested to be an Ombudsman."

If appointed, he said he will solve problems in the Office of the Ombudsman.

Prior to the interview, Martires' nomination was challenged by a group of Catholic priests, Evangelical pastors, and theological teachers who accused him of lack of probity.
