Some 343,000 overseas Filipino workers lost their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic, but over half of them do not want to go home to the Philippines, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said Friday.

Around 190,000 jobless OFWs refused to go home because they have unemployment insurance and are still hoping they can find work abroad, he told ABS-CBN's TeleRadyo.

There were about 2.2 million OFWs in 2019, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

The Philippines has repatriated some 54,000 OFWs due to the pandemic as of Thursday and 16,000 more are expected to come home until the end of June, said Bello.
