Private schools may have to spend more in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic due to a ban on face-to-face classes until a vaccine is available, the Department of Education said Tuesday.

"We have experienced na hindi dahil distance learning ay mababa ang gastos," DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said, when asked if online classes would lower tuition.

"In fact, malaki ang kailangan punan by our experience dahil iko-convert mo iyong learning resources that are intended for classroom-based instruction immediately into distance learning forms," he told ABS-CBN's TeleRadyo.

(We have experienced that expenses won't be low just because the mode is distance learning. In fact, there are many expenses because you need to convert the learning resources that are intended for classroom-based instruction immediately into distance learning forms.)

The tuition should reflect how a school reallocated its budget to cope with the pandemic, Malaluan said.

"Kung halimbawa, kung laboratory fees ay icha-charge pa rin at library fees, iyon ang definitely puwede nating tingnan," said the official.

(If for example, the laboratory and library fees will still be charged, we can definitely look into that.)
