Government agencies are ironing out the implementation of mandatory drug testing of all PUV drivers, which was recommended by President Rodrigo Duterte, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said Thursday.

Transport companies, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency
and LTFRB are discussing who should shoulder the cost for drug testing kits, said board member Atty. Aileen Lizada.

"But the arrangements are already there. We need to link up with PDEA and get guidance sa board by having a collegial discussion on it... But we fully agree [with President Duterte's recommendation]," she told radio DZMM.

Duterte last week said all bus drivers should undergo drug tests before going on long trips.

Long haul trips, he added, should also have one alternate driver.

An existing memorandum requires bus companies to assign alternate drivers to take over in case trips take more than 6 hours, noted Lizada.
