House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas on Wednesday lambasted the head of the Bureau of Fire Protection for failing to attend the first hearing into the arson attack that left 38 people killed in Resorts World Manila.

BFP director Bobby Baruelo told congressmen that he missed the June 7 hearing because he inspected the proposed site for a training center in Davao City.

"Nagkataon lang po na bago naipadala sa akin ang imbitasyon ay andoon napo ako sa Davao City and immediately after that, noong malaman ko kinabukasan, bumalik na po ako kaagad dito sa Maynila," Baruelo said.

A visibly irked Fariñas however said Davao City was only less than 2 hours away by plane.

"You were only checking the proposed site of a training center. Here, we have the House of Representatives conducting an inquiry about the death of 37 people, mostly fire-related and you felt that that was more important," he said.

"That is poor judgement on your part, as far as we are concerned."

Fariñas then extended his diatribe to the chairman of Resorts World, who also failed to show up for the inquiry.

Parañaque Rep. Gus Tambunting, chairman of the House games and amusement committee, then reminded resource persons to honor summons to legislative investigations.
