An inter-agency task force was recently created to solve perennial traffic jams to and from Cubao, Quezon City and Makati, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Monday, following President Rodrigo Duterte's directive for travel time in this area to be reduced to 5 minutes by the end of the year.

Under the task force, the public works department would introduce "engineering interventions" to ease traffic, which will be reblocked every weekend to give way to repairs along EDSA, said MMDA Special Operations Group head Bong Nebrija.
The MMDA, police Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation office and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board will also jointly man traffic from Cubao to Makati, he told radio DZMM.

Nebrija, however, admitted that to cover the 12.8-kilometer stretch of EDSA from Cubao to Makati in 5 minutes, vehicles would need to move at 155 kilometers per hour, which is too fast.

"Pero ang sa amin, more than anything else, the way we look at it is what the President said and how he said it... Now we have a goal, kung attainable iyan o hindi (if it's attainable or not)," said the official.

"Everybody should be on board, not just the government agencies, but also the people... Disiplina [ay] napakalaking bagay (discipline is a very big thing)," he added.
