Chopping up EDSA: Bikes, buses, private vehicles on major highway eyed
A House panel will ask authorities about their full plan and timeline for the transportation of some 12 million people in Metro Manila, a lawmaker said Thursday, 4 days into the region's relaxed coronavirus lockdown.
Authorities plan to designate the 2 innermost lanes of EDSA for buses that will augment train operations, the 2 lanes next to that for private vehicles and the rightmost lane nearest the sidewalk for bicycles, said House transportation committee chairman Cesar Sarmiento.
He said his committee would investigate the plan on Friday.
"Bukas po tatanungin natin kung ano talagang buong plano at malaman din natin iyong buong timeline nila," he told TeleRadyo.
(We will ask transport authorities tomorrow about their whole plan and timeline.)
"Ipinapakiusap natin na idaan muna ito sa dry run o simulation kasi mahirap naman na ipasok po natin ang bagong sistema 'pag hindi po natin nasusubukan," added the Congress representative of Catanduanes, who is also a civil engineer.
(We are asking that this go through dry run or simulation first because it's difficult for us to introduce a new system without testing it.)
Some commuters earlier this week were forced to walk, hail pricier taxis or wait in line for hours due to a shortage of buses in parts of Metro Manila.
"Tinatanggap po natin na may problema, pinag-uusapan po nang husto," said Sarmiento.
(We accept that there is a problem, it's being discussed thoroughly.)
