The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spoke with the rebels in Marawi City to request for safe passage of their people, who are leading relief efforts for evacuees and other civilians affected by the conflict.

Pascal Porchet, head of the ICRC delegation in the Philippines, said it was important for them to speak to the armed groups in order to guarantee "humanitarian access" to the civilians caught in the middle of the crossfire.

"We need to make sure that somebody can get in, that somebody can get those vulnerable people out, and that's what we're trying to do--so safe and secure humanitarian space," he said in an interview with ANC's Headstart.

Porchet said their organization has mobilized food packages and hygiene kits for 1,500 families in several evacuation sites in Mindanao and 1,500 more of those packages are on the way.
