One or 2 storms are expected to form over Philippine waters in June, following months of sweltering heat, the state weather bureau said Thursday.

The rainy season is expected to start in the first half of June, but El Niño, a weather pattern marked by reduced rainfall that has gripped the country since February, may drag on until the end of the year, said PAGASA weather forecaster Joey Figuracion.

Two to three storms are expected each in July and August, while 4 storms may batter the country in September, he told radio DZMM.

On Thursday, a frontal system or boundary between air masses will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Ilocos, Cordillera and Cagayan Valley regions, he warned.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience hot and humid weather that may be interrupted by isolated downpours, Figuracion said.
