Rains will drench large swaths of the country on Monday due to a frontal system or boundary between air masses, state weather PAGASA said, as it kept watch for signs of the dry season's looming end.

The frontal system affecting the eastern section of Luzon will bring cloudy skies and thunderstorms over Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Calabarzon regions, said PAGASA weather forecaster Ezra Bulquerin.

Metro Manila, Mimaropa and Western Visayas meanwhile will experience cloudy skies and scattered rains, he told radio DZMM.

The rest of the country can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies, he added.

PAGASA will declare the start of the rainy season once southwesterly winds become the dominant weather system and meteorologists tally at least 25 mm of rain for 5 consecutive days, said Bulquerin.

"Hinihintay na lang po nating ma-meet ang mga criteria para sa onset ng rainy season," he said.

(We are just waiting to meet these criteria for the onset of the rainy season.)

The rainy season is usually declared between the last week of May and the start of June, Bulquerin said.

No storm is expected to brew over Philippine waters in the next 3 to 5 days, he said.
