Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez on Monday rejected a proposal to share the speakership of the House of Representatives with other candidates for the post.

"Kalokohan 'yan (that's foolishness)... Sana 'wag ganyan kasi this is not about ourselves, this is about the country," he told ANC.

"Anong term-sharing, diba? It's either you or 'wag na lang. Basta kung sinong napili, gawin na lang n'ya iyung tama," he added.

(What term-sharing? It's either you or not at all. Whoever is chosen, they should just do what is right.)

The 18th Congress is set to convene in July, with Duterte’s “super majority” expected to push the rest of his legislative agenda, including more tax reforms and a shift to federalism.

Among those gunning for the speakership are Alvarez, incoming Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who regained a congressional seat in Taguig in the May 13 elections.
