The National Privacy Commission (NPC) on Wednesday said it has observed a rise in the number of public complaints over the unauthorized use of personal data, online hacking and information theft.

The commission tallied 207 complaints last year, but this figure has been overtaken by the 208 breach notifications in the first 4 months of 2018 alone, said NPC chairman Raymund Liboro.

(Our figures on that are rising. The public is becoming more aware and they are taking action. Perhaps eventually, their understanding of this will widen.)

The NPC, he said, has tasked government agencies and schools to come up with strategies for protecting data, in compliance with the Data Privacy Act of 2012, he said.

The privacy body will also soon require private firms to submit annual reports of security breach incidents.
