The midterm elections this week was "credible" despite thousands of faulty vote counting machines and secure digital (SD) cards, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said Thursday.

A total of 1,665 SD cards were replaced in the midterm polls compared to just 120 in 2016, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) earlier said. At least 961 vote-counting machines were also replaced out of a total 85,000, it added.

"Ang liit ng percentage ng nagkaproblema, kaya lang matingkad because it's on social media and the mainstream media usually picks it up," Sotto told reporters.

(The percentage of those that had problems is very small, it was only hyped because it's on social media and the mainstream media usually picks it up.)

"In general, kung tutuusin (if you think about it), I think the elections were credible," he added.

He also urged those questioning the elections to present evidence to back their claims.

Apart from voting glitches, Comelec also faced criticism over the delay of the delivery of real-time election results to its media partners, which the poll body attributed to an application error in the transparency server.

A Senate inquiry will look into the election glitches on June 3.
