Regulators will allow only one bus route in EDSA when Metro Manila is placed under general community quarantine, a less stringent lockdown that aims to contain the coronavirus pandemic, a transport leader said Monday.

The lone EDSA bus route will run from Monumento in Caloocan to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITx) and vice versa, said Juliet De Jesus, managing director of Samahang Transport Operators ng Pilipinas.

This is one of 29 bus routes that the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) planned for Metro Manila, down from 96 routes before the pandemic lockdown, she said.

Once the region's enhanced community quarantine is lifted, buses should carry only half of their capacity, install foot baths and check the temperature of passengers who are required to wear masks, De Jesus told DZMM.

Bus operators are negotiating with the government for a subsidy and studying a mandate for automated fare collection using tap cards, she said.

Under the relaxed quarantine, the MRT-3 and LRT will also carry only half of their capacity, said Transportation Assistant Secretary Mark Richmund De Leon.

Jeepneys and UV Express vans will be allowed to ferry passengers if trains and buses prove insufficient, he said in a separate DZMM interview.

Motorcycle taxis and backrides will still be prohibited, he said.
