One in 3 government workers are not regular employees though some have rendered years of public service, a union leader said on Labor Day.

Citing data from the Civil Service Commission of the Philippines, COURAGE union president Ferdinand Gaite said some 720,000 state employees are contractual out of the total 2.3 million.

"Nakaka-alarma ang bilang na iyun," Gaite told radio DZMM.

(That figure is alarming.)

Government workers, he added, are not covered by the Labor Code, which provides for the welfare of workers.

Gaite also said state employees will not be covered by an executive order ending labor contractualization, which President Rodrigo Duterte may sign.

"Pirmahan niya o hindi, ang government workers ay tutulak pa rin na dapat maging regular iyung daan libong kontraktwal," the union leader said.

(Whether or not he signs the order, government workers will continue pushing for the regularization of hundreds of thousands of contractual employees.)
