Local governments should complete before this month-end the distribution of the first tranche of cash aid to help the poorest Filipinos cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, the interior department said Tuesday.

"Mayroon pa po silang 3 araw para ubusin ito, ipamigay sa ating mga kababayan," Interior Undersecretary and Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya told DZMM.

"Sa tingin ko naman makakayanan nating matapos lahat before the end of this month," he added.

Some 18 million families stand to get P5,000 to P8,000 for 2 months.

Metro Manila and Calabarzon encountered delays in the distribution of cash assistance due to their high number of beneficiaries and local governments' limited manpower, Malaya said.

The cash aid distribution in Davao and Bicol regions meanwhile has reached 44.65 percent and almost 50 percent, respectively, he added.

The government allocated P200 billion for the 2-month cash subsidies under the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act that gave President Rodrigo Duterte additional powers to address the pandemic.

Local governments have submitted a list of additional beneficiaries who should be included in the program. The government is looking for P31.7 billion needed to give them cash aid, said Malaya.
